Field flow-wrapping puts fresh produce on supermarket shelves
By configuring its popular P225 flow wrapping machine for use in the field on salad and vegetable picking rigs, Redpack Packaging Machinery is helping farmers and contract packers to reduce the turn around time from picking fresh produce to it arriving on supermarket shelves, washed, packed and ready for sale.

To withstand the harsh outdoor weather conditions in areas such as the Lincolnshire Fens, all rig-mounted machines are manufactured from heavy-duty stainless steel and anodised aluminium to prevent rusting and surface deterioration. The gearbox and all the bearings are also sealed to reduce machine maintenance.

For outdoor use, the P225 features a stainless steel in-feed with integral grill-guarded apertures for fast and hygienic machine clean down. The in-feed also has special change parts for use when wrapping little gem lettuce to prevent bruising and product drag. A single axis seam crimp control is used to provide fast bag length adjustment and dead length print registration for pre-printed films. Transporting the P225 flow wrapping machine to and from the picking rig is made safe and relatively easy by the incorporation of fork-lift points, and jacking feet are used to optimise operator working height and to maximise machine stability.

The machine is powered by an electrical supply from a generator mounted on the picking rig, and Redpack has incorporated an electrical supply load reactor to filter out any current spikes.
