LEAF IS PROTECTING OUR FUTURE

LEAF is the acronym for Linking Environment and Farming, the organisation was established to do just that. As a charity LEAF will help farmers to improve their performance in business and create a better understanding of Integrated Farm Management (IFM) via demonstration farms.

Founded in 1991, LEAF presented the basic idea that farmers, environmentalists, food and agricultural organisations and consumers will all group together to influence the farming industry in a positive way. So far the organisation has been successful in its technique and approach. The advice offered is highly influential and is up to date, therefore it is helping to enhance the already available information and involves many important figures in the industry.
Having an advisory board consisting of thirty representatives for national government departments, farmers, supermarkets, conservation, environmental and consumer groups, educational establishments and industry bodies. The future of the farming industry as we know it can only be helped and encouraged by these key players.
Demonstration farms are specifically designed to allow a comprehensive look at how integrated farm management and the principles behind the idea. They have been developed to inform and educate other farmers in the IFM approach and offer living and working examples of how you can produce affordable food in harmony with the environment.
According to the organisations website (www.leafuk.org)
‘They also provide a regional insight in to the best local approach to IFM. A programme of visits to each farm goes on throughout the year – not only for farmers but anyone interested in how their food is produced.’

A HELPING HAND FOR FARMERS
As an organisation farmers are offered a detailed self-assessment audit of their own farm. This allows them to work on a detailed evaluation of their farm and targets can then be set to help improve their business, at the same time they will be helping to keep the environment protected.

AN INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
LEAF is part of a European Initiative for Sustainable Agriculture (EISA). Current projects are running in Germany, France, and Italy, they are operated similarly to the UK. It is also running in Luxembourg and Sweden. Working globally LEAF Marque certified farms are all over the world.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
‘The vision for the future is of a sustainable system of agriculture which meets the economic needs of farmers, addresses the concerns of consumers and minimises any impact on the environment. IFM provides a commonsense and realistic way forward for farmers and produces food that is wholesome and affordable’ (visit www.leafuk.org)
Demonstration farms are run by volunteers throughout the country. LEAF has innovation centres designed to research or pioneer new approaches. Last year Leaf had great success with Open Farm Sunday, where 400 farms opened up for more than 150,000 visitors. The success is hoped to be emulated again in 2008. This year Open Farm Sunday will be held on June 1st. If you require further information please log on to www.openfarmsunday.org.
