| At the same time, environmental
legislation is driving businesses to consider
how to reduce their carbon footprint. DS
Smith Packaging's strategy is to provide
customers with tools to analyse options from
every point of view.
Terry Ousley, Director,
says: "The first
initiative we took was to create a supermarket.
The Impact Centre provides customers with an
opportunity to see how their current and new
packs work in a simulated retail environment.
Customers can also use the unique benefits
of 'PackRight' - a suite of specially developed
tools which stimulate new ways of thinking
about packaging to drive costs out of supply
chains and improve sales and profits.
PackRight emcompasses design, (DesignRight),
print (ImageRight) and efficient packaging
supply (SupplyRight).
DesignRight provides box
performance prediction and ensures the right
use of space in distribution. The Impact
Centre is used to evaluate performance on
shelf and all this learning is applied to
the final structure and shape of the box
as well as the packing lines themselves.
The result is packaging which is fit for
purpose in every respect, and thus helps
optimise packing costs, distribution costs
and sales.
ImageRight helps customers
protect their brand imagery and achieve sales,
through accurate and consistent colour control
with increasing use of digital techniques
to determine specifications and ensure the
right result. The option to approve designs
on line can greatly accelerate speed to market
for new products and revisions.
SupplyRight sets out to
achieve the perfect balance between packaging
supply, orders, forecasts and stock. Agreed
and measured supply processes, in which electronic
transactions increasingly feature, make it
easier to do business, with security, lower
cost and less stock. And then there's the
environment. Corrugated packaging is fully
recyclable. An established and effective
infrastructure means that 84% of corrugated
is already recycled in the UK.”
Ousley explains: "Our 'Cradle to Cradle'
concept is based on a joined-up approach between
ourselves, as corrugated packaging manufacturers,
and our sister company Severnside Recycling,
the UK's largest recycler of paper and packaging.
Together, we are able to help businesses to
improve their entire environmental strategy.
Through DS Smith Packaging and Severnside,
the same fibres can be back on the shelves
as a box within 14 days!"
