As a company promoting the benefits
of lean construction, 8build advocate non adversarial,
mutually supportive types of business relationship.
They are not constrained by the traditional business
models of other construction companies and no one
else is doing what they do - a fact that did not
go unnoticed by the judges.
"This award honours the business brains who are
willing to put their own money on the line to create
the companies that the rest of us are happy to work
in. And this year boasts one of our best ever line-ups."
"The judges singled out contractor 8build as the
newcomer that has had the greatest impact on the industry
in the shortest amount of time. They were impressed
with the founders' commitment to ethical business,
leaving established companies to form their own in
line with their personal values. The company places
importance on its place in the local community, its
minimal environmental impact, its transparency, its
corporate governance, the fair treatment of the supply
chain, and the principles of innovative lean construction.
Since it was formed, the firm has enjoyed considerable
success, gaining work with a notable list of clients
that include British Land, Canary Wharf Contractors,
Slaughter & May, and Global Switch. The venture
clearly has enormous potential."
8build clearly recognise that everyday they impact
on the workplaces and local environments of people;
as a result they believe that they have to contribute
to and support their employees, customers and the community
in which they live and work.
They achieved this in a number of ways. Health and
safety, for instance, is a top priority, 8build have
become accredited members of ROSPA, the National Britannia
SAFE Contractor scheme, CHAS and Constructionline alongside
having already obtained a CSCS gold certificate for
commitment. They have also obtained the BSI Quality
standard ISO 9001.
As regards the environment, 8build ensures they put
back what they take out. They thought long and hard
when considering how to go about this, and made the
decision to become Carbon Neutral; this way their commitment
is tangible, sustainable, honest and measurable. The
programme to which 8build subscribe provides improved
cooking stoves (ICS) for rural communities in Nepal.
They also use their management skills to reduce the
impact of the construction process through waste management
and recycling.
8build actively engage with their local communities
too, from working with students through the Hackney
Education Business Programme through to building projects
with out fee for the Salvation Army. The company has
associations with accredited bodies such as the CIOB
and CITB helping to attract people to the Construction
Industry and also supports charitable giving. This
year, for example, it has supported Vision South Pole,
The Great Ormond Street Hospital, Action Medical Research,
Small Steps, Whizz Kidz, English Martyrs Church, Hampton
Infant School and Nursery and the Massai Joy Children's
Centre and Nursery.
It will come as no surprise therefore that as a result
of their transparency and their flexible approach to
working practices that 92% of its work comes through
repeat business and recommendation. Interestingly and
in accordance with this approach they work for clients
directly, other contractors as well as sub contractors.
Ultimately, each of these ways of working provides
mutually beneficial relationships for each party and
provides the most advantageous outcome for the end
client.
8build is not just a construction company: They are
challenging industry norms with a totally unique way
of working, tendering competitively against big industry
market leaders and winning. What's more it is managing
to change the attitudes and mindsets of clients and
professional teams, demonstrating to them the many
benefits that their honest and transparent approach
can bring.
